Mansfield University's Writing Program is designed
to ensure that students receive a skill and knowledge
base in writing that is commensurate with a
university education and that will allow them to
succeed as members of a profession and as members of
society. In addition to standard composition courses
offered by English professors, students are expected
to take writing- designated courses offered by
professors from across the curriculum. These courses
are primarily intended to broaden the students'
writing experience, as well as to provide them
"applied" writing experiences, especially
within their major area of study. Numerous WAC
courses are offered each semester by the university's
departments and are identified on semester schedules
with a "W" after the course number.
The WAC Requirement
A student satisfies the Writing Across the
Curriculum requirement by successfully completing ENG
112, ENG 313, and three writing-designated courses.
At least one of the three writing-designated courses
must be at the upper division level (300/400), though
two or even all three may be upper division courses.
If deemed necessary, students also may be required to
complete a preparatory writing course, ENG 090,
before attempting ENG 112.
Exemptions and Appeals
Since the WAC Program has been in place for well over a decade, ignorance of the
WAC requirement by either students, advisors, or professors is
not a just cause for exemption from all
or part of the WAC requirement. Keeping this in mind, a
student's advisor, professor, or department chair who
thinks that a student does have a
just cause for exemption or some sort of curricular reconsideration
may appeal to the WAC Committee in writing.
The appeal must include the student's name and ID
number, an explanation of the action that is
being requested, and a justification for taking that
action. Supporting materials may also be required.
All such appeals should be sent to either
of the chairs of the WAC Committee, Cathy D"Ortona in
Elliott or Monica Lambert in Retan. The
committee will contact the sponsoring advisor,
professor, or department chair with a decision by the
end of the term in which the appeal is received.
WAC Matrix for Transfer and Matriculated Students
Transfer students who matriculated at Mansfield
will have their WAC requirements determined on the
basis of total credits accepted in transfer. These
students will be expected to complete ENG 112 and ENG
313, or transfer courses equivalent to either or
both. Concerning the three writing-designated
courses, the following matrix will apply for transfer
students.
| Transfer credits |
WAC Course Requirement |
| 1-32 |
2(100/200 level), 1(300/400
level) |
| 33-64 |
1(100/200 level), 1(300/400
level) |
| 65-128 |
1(300/400 level) |
Keep in mind that students may substitute 300/400
level "W" courses for 100/200 level
"W" course. Also, students may be allowed
to transfer "W" courses, providing the
transferred course was a part of a
college/university's recognized WAC program. Such
information will be indicated on a student's
evaluation record.
For general information about the transfer of
credits, contact Brian Barden, Transfer Coordinator,
Alumni Hall, extension 4813. For information about
transfer credit for ENG 112 or ENG 313, contact the
English Department Chair, Walter Sanders, Belknap
Hall, extension 4592.
